OVERVIEW
WALTER GROPIUS IS regarded as the father of the Bauhaus movement. Moving to Weimar in 1919 he transformed what was the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts into the famed Bauhaus academy. By attracting and mentoring a faculty that included some of the most famous names in 20th Century design, a truly groundbreaking, design philosophy was to emerge, spurred on by Gropius. / The school’s most innovative educational aspect was its dualistic approach to training in the workshops, which were codirected by a craftsman (master of works) and an artist (master of form). / Gropius himself as designer, extended his hand from furniture, interiors through to automobiles, wallpaper. As avant-garde architect his work took in a thoroughly modern approach as was seen in his epic design for the Fagus-Werk, a factory built in 1911 in the town of Alfed an der Leine.
